Another one of those things about things...

In the interest of making my current period of unemployment as productive as can be, I am going to start a blog cataloguing one delicious food item in New York a day. After years and years of navigating the bountiful selection in this city, my mind is chock-full of ideas. And if I start to run out of them…well then it will be a reminder that I am not doing my duty as a food-lover, and am failing to eat out often enough in this amazing place (Although I can almost guarantee you that won’t happen).

#8: Wienerschnitzel

Ok, so I think this is New York? Take the L to Wyckoff. Hop on the Q 55 bus and in about 15 minutes you will be deposited in a dark room, with grumpy old men, heavy wooden tables, Franz (see left) and big busted women in sexy German outfits…ok I made up the last thing. But Zum Stammtisch is worth the trip to Queens. I have been eating there since I was born, and despite that I pretty much always order the same thing (possibly to avoid my German grandmother’s look of disapproval if you happen to order the wrong thing... like sauerbraten). You’ve actually got a great variety of solid traditional options, but if your making a one time pilgrimage, get the wienerschnitzel. Choose creamed spinach as your side... and add an order of red cabbage while you’re at it! (Wow, when did this blog get so bossy…) It comes out piping hot, crispy, with just greasy enough home fries and a big lemon slice to squeeze on top. I’ve tried a lot of the Manhattan variety German options (Loreley does have decent currywurst, but that same grandmother would probably respond by saying "Curryvursht? Vat is daaat??). If you want classic German, nothing compares to the Stammtisch.
