Another one of those things about things...

In the interest of making my current period of unemployment as productive as can be, I am going to start a blog cataloguing one delicious food item in New York a day. After years and years of navigating the bountiful selection in this city, my mind is chock-full of ideas. And if I start to run out of them…well then it will be a reminder that I am not doing my duty as a food-lover, and am failing to eat out often enough in this amazing place (Although I can almost guarantee you that won’t happen).

#2: Dumplings

I am a bit of an unbiased dumpling lover. The word dumpling is synonymous with delicious, which is why they are one of the most wallet friendly foods to enjoy. If this were a battle of price, I would have to go with Vanessa’s did-i-really-just-get-all-that-food-for-$3?! Dumplings. But since, as mentioned, dumplings are already a great cheap eat anyway, I have to go with the steamed Sha Momos at a Tibetan place called CafĂ© Himalaya (78 E 1st street). Veggie and chicken are both delicious, but the winning filler for me is the beef. The dough is chewy perfection, and inside a warm salty broth awaits, surrounding a well-seasoned little ball of, well you know, dumpling meat stuff. Oh…did I mention the amazing chili sauce?

Anyway, bring your own booze and order those puppies up. Drunk or sober, it’ll be a worthy snack.

  1. Would it even be fair to include the Soup dumplings from Joe's Shanghai in the mix? Their pork dumplings, aside from being a trap for the untrained in the proper manner of their consumption, are heavenly. Though hot at first, a small puncture allows the steam to escape steadily; blowing to fill the dumpling with cool air doesn't hurt either. Place a mouth at this opening and the juice you suck out is more than worth this sexual inuendo. At this juncture, introducing some Soy Sauce, chillis or both through this perforation would be prudent. With one or two bites, the dumpling is gone and you're hungry to begin again, but not to worry, there'll be more dumplings where that came from.

Also, it's cheap and BYOB. Babysit me.
