Another one of those things about things...

In the interest of making my current period of unemployment as productive as can be, I am going to start a blog cataloguing one delicious food item in New York a day. After years and years of navigating the bountiful selection in this city, my mind is chock-full of ideas. And if I start to run out of them…well then it will be a reminder that I am not doing my duty as a food-lover, and am failing to eat out often enough in this amazing place (Although I can almost guarantee you that won’t happen).

#10: Yakitori

Yakitori, like shish kabob, skewer, etc…is another word for meat cooked on stick (er well you might want to double check that translation before you go spouting it as fact). Anyway if you have ever walked down St. Mark’s you may have noticed these intimidating places with signs in Japanese, large crowds of people cooler then you, and the most confusing picture menu you will ever read. I had the luck of going to Yakitori Taisho with some experts, and have the ordering down to a science. (I divulge this knowing fully well if I ever take you there, you will no longer believe I understand the menu and am ordering “off the cuff”).

- Tako Yaki: Octopus balls (as in doughy balls with pieces of octopus in the middle... get your mind out of the gutter)

- Mentai Potato (basically French fries with a cod mayo dipping sauce)

- Kimchee Yakiudon: pan-fried udon noodles with pork kimchee

- Ume Sasami: Chicken with plum paste skewer… That is my favorite but any and all skewers that suit your fancy, from squid legs to shishito peppers, should be devoured

- Grilled Rice balls of varying kinds (more balls)

Honestly, that’s just to get you started. Did I mention yakitori means delicious/greasy/tapas style/heaven?
