Another one of those things about things...

In the interest of making my current period of unemployment as productive as can be, I am going to start a blog cataloguing one delicious food item in New York a day. After years and years of navigating the bountiful selection in this city, my mind is chock-full of ideas. And if I start to run out of them…well then it will be a reminder that I am not doing my duty as a food-lover, and am failing to eat out often enough in this amazing place (Although I can almost guarantee you that won’t happen).

#12: Bagel and lox

While I am in Katz’s neck of the woods, I have to draw your attention to a team of experts in lab coats who may or may not have PhD’s in smoked salmon. Russ and Daughters is a true New York experience, with a clientele as lively as a Woody Allen cast. Like many New York institutions, I always feel slightly inadequate when ordering…for bypassing the smoked white fish salad or the wasabi infused flying fish roe for something more conventional to put on my bagel: lox, cream cheese, capers, tomato and red onion. The bagel is fresh, chewy and never toasted. The salmon is silky and plentiful. The cream cheese is double whipped and homemade. Get this sandwich and you can always take some chicken liver to go.
