I wouldn’t say coffee shops are such a New York thing per se. I think this belief comes from years of watching Friends with my mother, who is from here. Every time shots of their coffee shop hangout* came on the screen, with its roomy space and plush couches, she would be outraged and shout, “That’s not New York. That’s California! Who did the research for this show?”… But nowadays there are some great cozy spots with their own New York flavor. I am not going to go with my neighborhood Stumptown provider (in my case Variety in Williamsburg) but rather one I love so much it is worth the trip to the west village, just for a snack and a bit of reading. Dear Grey Dog Café, let me count the ways… You have an adorably decorated space with groovy tunes. You have a menu of salads and sandwiches that are fresh and delicious. You have your own brew of coffee that still takes the cake. You have just baked cookies the size of my head. Most importantly, you have microbrews on tap for those times I’m there after 12pm**.
*Central Perk for all your fans.
