Another one of those things about things...

In the interest of making my current period of unemployment as productive as can be, I am going to start a blog cataloguing one delicious food item in New York a day. After years and years of navigating the bountiful selection in this city, my mind is chock-full of ideas. And if I start to run out of them…well then it will be a reminder that I am not doing my duty as a food-lover, and am failing to eat out often enough in this amazing place (Although I can almost guarantee you that won’t happen).

#18: Dip

Now that I have mentioned Freemans, I feel I must give it a thing. You can’t help but feel cool going here. It sits at the end of an alley way like hidden treasure, covered in Christmas lights and bursting with warm cheer (I have often looked on longingly at that cheer while waiting for a table). It is especially suited for the wintertime, where the candlelit cavernous space, complete with ironic taxidermy and knickknacks, makes you want to put on your best flannel. I must admit that in my opinion, the popularity and the price have gone up, while the quality not so much. However, since waiting for table is a popular Freemans activity, I have frequently sampled their appetizers at the bar. And there lie the true stars of the menu. I am gonna give a shout out to the Devils on Horseback (don’t ask, just order them). But I would reckon this place has the best artichoke dip in town. Rather than waiting it might be faster to fly to Minneapolis’ Old Loring Café (where apparently the co owner got the recipe). I’m kidding though. The wait really isn’t that bad. And the dip is gooooooood… steaming hot, with a mystery combo of cheese, garlic, mayonnaise, spices, and artichoke that ensures the plate will be licked clean (or rubbed clean with the crispy bread it comes with).
