Another one of those things about things...

In the interest of making my current period of unemployment as productive as can be, I am going to start a blog cataloguing one delicious food item in New York a day. After years and years of navigating the bountiful selection in this city, my mind is chock-full of ideas. And if I start to run out of them…well then it will be a reminder that I am not doing my duty as a food-lover, and am failing to eat out often enough in this amazing place (Although I can almost guarantee you that won’t happen).

#20: Salad

So, when my friend mentioned I hadn’t really been doing a lot of veg friendly posts, and I responded, “PBR is vegetarian!” I realized it was time for a salad. I am actually amazed I have gotten through 19 “things” without focusing on Northern Spy. A word on the restaurant itself: It is, in fact, my favorite place in the city at the moment. As is often the case in NYC (and not LA), it is both delicious enough for Danny Meyer to go eat there, and low key enough for them to put him on the list with an hour plus wait (true story… although it seemed they didn’t recognize him, and sadly, he didn’t wait). They have a local, sustainable focus. To give you an idea, they buy the whole hog and use it in its entirety. This results in a different pork special everyday, in which they creatively use the pig in new, tasty ways. The other specials are equally ingenious, with combinations that always surprise.

Oh wait… this is about salad!

I find salads, even when topped inventively and dressed to perfection, still fail to feel like a new experience. This one does (behold its glory in the picture above). The kale is a great change to start, and it additionally has clothbound cheddar, cubes of roasted squash, toasted almonds and pecorino, and a lemon dressing (vegetable plus lemon equals always delicious). Northern Spy. All I can say is go go go.
