The first time I went to Fette Sau, I was like what a cute idea! You wait in line and get a tray. You then pick out your meat right from the counter, as well as your sides. I thought it was an ironically casual twist on a really gourmet place (if you are from the south or at all familiar with Barbeque, you are now cued to shake your head). When I visited Austin last year, I realized this is how a lot of BBQ joints are set up... just not a lot of them in New York. That is not the only thing unique about Fette Sau for the city. They have an entire bar devoted to whiskey, and the amount of varieties and flavors makes you wish you could call over the whiskey sommelier (its only a matter of time before that becomes a real thing). There is also an amazing beer selection served in my favorite drinking vessel: the Mason jar,
All this adds to the charm of a place that has just straight up delicious BBQ. Pork belly! Ribs! Brisket! (wow its like I do one salad and become a blood thirsty beast). You definitely want to get the baked beans as a side, and I’m partial to the German potato salad. I knew id love this place when I heard its by the same guys who do Spuyten Duyvil, a bar with a beer selection that puts the rest of Brooklyn to shame… Actually Brooklyn has a lot of amazing beer, but I felt cool writing that anyway. You can swing by after you fill up on meat. All in Williamsburg.
p.s. I hear they are open late night until 2am. After 11, you can get pulled pork and sausage sandwiches for $5 a piece. Only in this blessed city…
p.p.s. Speaking of late night, this post is about to cheat on BBQ with some meatballs (those saucy minxes). Turns out the previously blogged about Meatball Shop is also open late night. Not only that, they now have the choice of adding “the Family Jewels”, or a fried egg, to your balls (hmm sounds redundant). My friends ordered classic beef balls with Parmesan cream sauce and a fried egg on top. Sounds ridiculous in the bad way but turned out to be ridiculously good.
You are good (1)
