Another one of those things about things...

In the interest of making my current period of unemployment as productive as can be, I am going to start a blog cataloguing one delicious food item in New York a day. After years and years of navigating the bountiful selection in this city, my mind is chock-full of ideas. And if I start to run out of them…well then it will be a reminder that I am not doing my duty as a food-lover, and am failing to eat out often enough in this amazing place (Although I can almost guarantee you that won’t happen).

#26: Mexican Food

Ok, when I say the words Mexican food and New York City in the same sentence, we are all thinking the same thing. So let's just say it together. Mexican food, in New York City…. is in really out of the way places… Wait, were you going to say sucks? Yeah, I don’t blame you. I hear, mostly from my California friends, just how bad it tends to be. And truthfully I do have qualms with a lot of over priced places, that charge me $25 for guacamole that can be equally delicious made at home (oh god, I am my mother... see chicken). The two best places for Mexican food, in my book, are the ones that break the American style mode. That have corn based tortillas, dishes like sopes, and cotija cheese (none of that mozzarella crap). Unfortunately these are two places pretty far out of the way.

One, La Fiesta, is located on the corner of 158th and Broadway. I mentioned sopes (pictured above if you've never heard of them) earlier thinking of this place. Additionally, their burritos, tamales and tacos are both authentic and delicious… Authenticity confirmed when my roommate, who is Mexican and from California, gave it the thumbs up. Deliciousness confirmed because after leaving the heights, I still crave their food. The second is Tortelleria Mexicana Los Hermanos, a tortilla factory in Bushwick that also serves as a taco stand of sorts. Now, given the clientele is mostly white hipsters, its authenticity might be in question, but truthfully it’s a great spot. Bushwick has a lot to offer, and I highly recommend an outing in that neighborhood that includes some carnitas tacos and quesadillas from this joint.

Since I offered two places most of you may never venture to, I’d like to add two that might be less unique, but still offer a great experience off a more beaten path. One: Barrio Chino. Well priced, on the cutest corner of the lower east side, and a delicious margarita to boot. Go at an off time or prepare to wait 2 hours. The second is a recent find, an absolutely adorable garage style space, serving up tacos from a vintage VW truck. Tacombi NYC at Fonda Nolita is a great spot if you happen to find yourself in the Notlia/Soho area. Surprisingly, the veggie options are the highlight. The roasted corn and red pepper was number one, followed by the cactus and black bean. Add a tamarind juice and the whole experience kinda feels like a day at the beach. Before making any final judgements on Mexican food in NYC, check it.
