Another one of those things about things...

In the interest of making my current period of unemployment as productive as can be, I am going to start a blog cataloguing one delicious food item in New York a day. After years and years of navigating the bountiful selection in this city, my mind is chock-full of ideas. And if I start to run out of them…well then it will be a reminder that I am not doing my duty as a food-lover, and am failing to eat out often enough in this amazing place (Although I can almost guarantee you that won’t happen).

#28: The Egg

Iris Cafe, located on a particularly quaint block of Brooklyn Heights, does not allow laptops. But here I am, typing away… while continually averting my eyes like a school child who does not know the answer, hoping they will allow me to continue. Oh no, here she comes. Yup ok no laptops. Apparently the rule applies to me. But since I am already here she said that she “will make an exception” just this once.

The child in me wants to push the logic of this rule. There are 2 men playing chess. What if I were playing chess on my computer? What if I were scribbling deep thoughts with my keyboard as opposed to a notebook, or reading the times like that guy (but taking up much less space)?

No, no. I will take the high road. I will even reward this kind exception with food blog fame beyond their wildest imagination… wait, anyone still reading?

The egg is probably the most important food out there (if all food went to high school, it would be queen bee), and the one at this place is a winner among winners. Iris Cafe soft boils their farm fresh egg and pairs it with the simplest ingredients: a doughy baguette, some slightly tangy Dijon, homemade salsa…

To be more specific, I love the country ham and egg salad. The ham is sweet, the egg soft boiled to runny perfection, with balsamic drizzled greens adding the always needed touch of acidity, sliced tomatoes and a buttered baguette on the side. You can also find the same perfect egg paired with a generous helping of avocado mounted on toast (Dijon on top is a great touch... see above picture).

It's the type of simple, fresh and clean food that makes you feel good (not often how I feel after eating overly dolled up eggs for brunch at other places). One Sunday, between several giant lattes, the New York Times and many backed up new yorker issues, I was in heaven (and the poster child for stuff white people like come to think of it). Is there anything better then a lazy Sunday?
