I would like to open by warning you this post will be a story followed by an unrelated recommendation for a place with good whiskey. Reading this will be similar to having conversations with me (if you’ve ever done so) in which unrelated topics are strewn together in a nonsensical monologue. Enjoy.
I have a confession. As a whole I'm a pretty oblivious person. My uncle who I live with asked me if he had left his bike downstairs, literally in front of the entrance to my bedroom, and I had no idea. If Spiderman swung by mid battle with the green goblin as we walked down 5th ave, I probably wouldn't notice.
Such obliviousness is what led me to sit down at Henry Public at 10 pm on a Thursday night (aka party time!) and proceed to have a turkey sandwich and a beer at the bar solo. At normal non-party time hours this behavior is thought of as acceptable and even "cool" (see turkey sandwich). But in this context, I ordered my 2nd beer and was informed by the bartender, with some pity in his eyes, that it was on the house. This prompted the girl sitting next to me with her date to turn and say "good for you", which made me realize I was unknowingly the mascot of a brave, but somewhat sad, lonely girl. Reading a book called “Delivering Happiness” probably didn’t help my cause (Not actually self-help material but rather about creating a happy business culture by the CEO of Zappos). I probably looked like you should be passing me numbers for a suicide hotline.
Ok all this to say that the turkey sandwich at Henry Public still rocks. And I wish to declare a thing for a place that reminds me a lot of Henry Public (I warned you).
The Richardson is sort of a Williamsburg transplant of Henry Public (I find the key difference being in Brooklyn Heights its all a little more expensive, and the cliental a tad more bro-ey. Yea thats a word). You can count on dim lights, swinging tunes, and cute furry bartenders. In addition to great ambience and awesome cocktails, they have delicious whiskey, a blend made special for them by Buffalo Trace. The bar gets several samples and once one is approved, they receive a big barrel. I found all this out on new years day, when I got sublimely wasted off delicious shots of the stuff (don’t worry... I wasn’t alone). The Richardson is a bit of a walk off the L, but definitely worth the adventure. (I chose this picture because it captures how the place feels). For a great whiskey drinks closer off Bedford, I'll add a shout out for Hotel Delmano. Cheers!
OK Britt...I enjoy them all and this one...well, having had the pleasure of lunching with you and your sister...joyful...that is how I put it...so much so that now that I am taking an apt in NY, I am going to make a schedule to visit the establishments in each of your blogs with friends and bring a copy of your blog with us (so we know what to order)
