Another one of those things about things...

In the interest of making my current period of unemployment as productive as can be, I am going to start a blog cataloguing one delicious food item in New York a day. After years and years of navigating the bountiful selection in this city, my mind is chock-full of ideas. And if I start to run out of them…well then it will be a reminder that I am not doing my duty as a food-lover, and am failing to eat out often enough in this amazing place (Although I can almost guarantee you that won’t happen).

#36: Margarita

La Superior, much like a lot of places in Williamsburg, is trying really hard to declare “I am the real deal”, unlike the scores of imposters. In this case, it is with Mexican food. And good thing! The menu specifies not to ask for guacamole, sour cream or the like and also boasts street cart delicacies like tongue tacos and pigs foot tostadas (the latter being quite tasty). While the food is great, nothing makes for a better south of the border experience than an excellent margarita. And this one takes the tequila! (Ok I am getting cheesy…. Must be my blogging age. If I measure my lifespan in posts, I am nearing 50 things and getting quite old).

Tamarind is a flavor I came to know when I worked and lived in Washington Heights. In the summer the streets are frequented with men selling icies, freshly shaved off a huge block of ice in the ever multipurpose shopping cart. Maybe not the most hygienic... but definitely just what you want on a hot day! The students I taught (back when I was Ms. Neuhaus) hands down always went for the “tamarindo” flavored syrup, which is a fruit many Puerto Ricans and Dominicans grow up with (so I was told). La Superior does a tamarind margarita that is perfection. The tamarind is sweet, but with a puckery sour aftertaste, plus a hit of tequila (no one likes a weak drink) and something spicy (apparently Tabasco and chili) to round out a unique and delicious drink. Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea but for what its worth (and if your reading maybe something?)…I thought it was rocking. And for more on tamarind... did you see Mexican food?
